THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An office of the Legal Metrology office was caught by vigilance while taking bribe from petrol pump owner here in Akkulam. The vigilance team recovered Rs 8000 bribe money from BS Ajith Kumar, a Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology.

The legal metrology officers should check and seal the nozzles at the petrol pumps every three months to ensure that the pumps are dispensing the correct quantity of petrol. Swaroop, the owner of Nagaraj and Sons Fuel Station in Akkulam, had submitted an application to the Legal Metrology Office in Pattom to check and putting a seal on six nozzles in the pump. Deputy controller Ajith Kumar came to the pump and asked Swaroop, the pump owner, to give him a reward in order to check the nozzle.

Swaroop informed this to Vinod Kumar, Thiruvananthapuram Vigilance Unit Deputy Superintendent of Police. Then on Tuesday, Ajith Kumar with three officers reached the pump at Akkulam and sealed six petrol nozzles. Without the knowledge of officers that accompanied him, Ajith Kumar demanded a bribe of Rs 12000 from Swaroop. To this Swaroop said he has only Rs 8000 with him now and assured the rest later. While taking this bribe from Swaroop, Vigilance caught the officer red-handed. The accused will be produced before the Thiruvananthapuram Vigilance Court.
