KOCHI: The food safety department have seized stale fish from the market in Ernakulam Palluruthy. The officials said the fish of 200 kilograms is found to be of two months old. Tuna, Tilapia and ribbon fish bought for cheap price from Munambam Mattanchery Harbours and taken to Palluruthy markets for sale, were seized. It will be destroyed after examination.

The officials had the other day seized and destroyed the fish near the BOT bridge while trying to smuggle it out of the harbour. Following the sale of stale fish in the market, the officials are conducting extensive inspections in the fish markets of the district. Fish from other states is bought at a low price, brought to the harbor and transferred to cold storages and sold as fish from Thoppumpadi.

Widespread corruption in the sale of fish came to light since the time of Covid. Local residents have alleged that the fish imported from other states were collected and sold. The fish is wholesaled at a low price due to inadequate refrigeration upon arrival after fishing. Officials of the food department said they will check whether the fish that arrived in this way has been seized.
