CHENNAI: The six convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case has been released from jail. Nalini, Murugan, Robert Payas, Jayakumar and Ravichandran were freed as per the Supreme court verdict. Nalini, who is on parole, has spent the past 30 years in Vellore Special Jail, Murugan and Santhan in Vellore Central Jail, Robert Payas and Jayakumar in Chennai Puzhal Jail and Ravichandran in Thoothukudi Central Jail. Santhan, Robert Payas and Jayakumar, who are Sri Lankan nationals were transferred to the camp in Trichy.
The bench comprising of Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna ordered to free the convicts following the verdict releasing Perarivalan. The important order was declared after considering the stance of the Tamil Nadu government. The court also pointed out that despite the Tamil Nadu government's recommendation to release all the convicts, the Governor did not take action.
