VAIKOM: A headmistress ended her life as she was unable to cope with the workload. The dead has been identified as K Sreeja (48), headmistress of Vaikom Polassery Govt L P School. She committed suicide on Friday evening. Her relatives complained that she was depressed in rejecting her request sent to education minister demanding to cancel her promotion as she could not bear the workload. The Vaikom police have registered a case of unnatural death in the incident.

Sreeja, who was a teacher at Vaikom Girls' High School was promoted as headmistress of Keezhur GLPS on June 1. Though she joined the next day, she took leave as she could not bear the pressure of more responsible work. She later submitted an application to education minister on July 7 asking for the cancellation of the promotion citing her husband’s health issues. Her demand was to appoint her as a teacher in the school where she had previously worked in Vaikom. Sreeja got a reply from Kuravilangad sub district education officer that there is no provision in the rules to consider her application. Relatives said she took the drastic step after depressed over it.

She leaves behind her husband Ramesh Kumar, an employee of Vaikom Munsiff Court and son Karthik.
