DOHA: Before the World Cup match, it is customary for the players of the participating countries to sing the national anthem. However, in today's match between England and Iran, the Iranian players used it to protest but in a different way. In solidarity with the anti-hijab protests in the country, they refused to sing along when the national anthem of Iran was played in the stadium.

This has become a protest that has attracted the attention of not only the Iran government but also the people of the world. Iranian women who came to watch the match witnessed this protest with teary eyes. Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi announced that it was their collective decision not to sing the national anthem. In September, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the Iran morality police for not wearing a hijab, died while in custody. After the death of Mahsa, there was a huge protest in the country against the Iranian dress code laws for women. Many people died and some were brutally tortured. The Iranian government is trying to suppress the uprising by controlling social media and internet facilities. Meanwhile, England defeated Iran 6-2 in today's match.
