New war front in Congress

shashi-tharoor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although KPCC president K Sudhakaran banned public statements on Shashi Tharoor's Malabar tour, opposition leader VD Satheesan lashed out against Tharoor yesterday. A new war front has opened in the state Congress, with Tharoor also responding to Satheesan, albeit not so strongly.

Things seem to be shifting from the traditional group equations to the point where there is a Tharoor side and an anti-Tharoor side. Satheesan indirectly mocked Tharoor as a balloon inflated by the media. He also warned that parallel activities in the party will not be tolerated. Tharoor later retorted that he did not come as part of a group in Kerala politics and was opposed to sectarianism.

While MPs MK Raghavan and K Muraleedharan openly supported Tharoor, many senior leaders of A and I groups are secretly blessing Tharoor. The reason for the love towards Tharoor is that some leaders of the A group are dissatisfied with the state leadership. They are disappointed that they will not get any significant opportunities hereafter. Young leaders of both groups are supporting Tharoor', hoping that their future will become more secure if Tharoor becomes strong in state politics. There is another faction that wants the dominant KC Venugopal-VD Satheesan alliance in the national leadership not to become strong. It is indicated that the KPCC president's mind is also in the same direction.

Suspicions are also rife that Tharoor's recent moves are being backed by the 'A' group. Among those who welcomed Tharoor in Malappuram was A group's prominent leader and DCC president V.S Joy. However, Aryadan Shoukath and AP Anilkumar MLA did not come. Ramesh Chennithala, who campaigned strongly against Tharoor in the AICC president election, is yet to open his mind. Even though he is not very fond of Tharoor, Chennithala will not side with the anti-Tharoor gang led by Venugopal and Satheesan. Many leaders did not like the reception received by Tharoor when he visited Panakkad Thangal. Tharoor's influence among the youth and intellectuals also irked detractors.
