Woman murders daughter for opposing marriage of her choice

CHENNAI: A woman murdered her daughter, a nursing student, for refusing to marry the youth, of their choice. The incident happened yesterday at Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. The dead is P Aruna (19), daughter of Arumugha Kani and Pichai. After murdering her, her mother attempted suicide and is now under treatment.

Aruna’s father and brother are auto drivers in Chennai. Aruna, a nursing student in Coimbatore, had returned home six months ago. The family of the youth, selected by her mother was supposed to visit them the other day. When Aruna opposed the marriage, in a fit of rage, her mother strangled her. She later attempted suicide by consuming some powder. She was immediately taken to the hospital by her neighbours. The Tamil Nadu police have registered a case and a probe has started.
