THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid the relief of overcoming Covid, there is a serious concern in the state about the spread of fever (influenza) with symptoms of severe cough, shortness of breath and other discomforts. Fever is much more complicated in people that were infected by Covid. Experts point out that their lungs have a much lesser ability to withstand the influenza virus.
In 26 days, 2.52 lakh people came to government hospitals alone due to fever. 72,640 people arrived within a week. Malappuram and Kannur are the districts that are the most affected. There were 14 fever related deaths in the state this year.
Influenza virus infects the throat, nose and lungs. Symptoms include prolonged coughing and shortness of breath. Influenza A and B variants are present in Kerala. This was confirmed when the samples were tested at the Virology Institute. Those who come with such symptoms are tested for Covid only in emergency situations. If it is negative, no other tests are done as it is not life-threatening.
Fever up to 104 degrees
Previously, children had high fevers of 100 degrees. Doctors say the average fever is now 104 degrees. Paracetamol injection does not relieve fever. High-strength paracetamol should be given as a drip.
'Influenza can be very difficult even for those who have suffered minor lung damage due to Covid.'

Mask should be used strictly. Wearing a mask in crowds can protect against influenza. The elderly should also receive the influenza vaccine.'
