Do not play games with future of engineering students

ktu

The High Court has upheld the Governor's decision to appoint Dr Ciza Thomas as the temporary VC of the Kerala Technological University. The court rejected the petition filed by the government in this regard. It also directed the government to find a new VC within two to three months. The non-cooperation strike by the government and pro-government organizations in the university over Dr. Ciza's appointment should have normally come to an end in the wake of the High Court ruling. But it is learnt that things are not moving in that direction. The government is planning to file an appeal in the division bench against the single bench order upholding Ciza's appointment. Although it has been weeks since Dr Ciza assumed office as interim VC, the protestors have not yet allowed her to perform any duties as VC. The administrative deadlock may continue in the university if there is no favourable approach from the protestors in the wake of the new court order.

The strike may go on for a long time as the VC, the government and those belonging to pro-government organizations will get their salaries without any interruption. But the issue of engineering students who are remaining as scapegoats in the Governor-Government battle cannot be forgotten. More than eight thousand students are waiting for their degree certificates after passing the final engineering exam. A large number of these students have secured placements in various establishments. Many people are preparing to go for higher studies in the state and abroad. Failure to produce the certificate on time may adversely affect the future of many.

Taking into account the future of engineering students, the court said that the dispute between the governor and the government in the name of the VC should never escalate to the level of harming the students.

From the day Dr Ciza Thomas entered the university as a temporary VC, till now about fifty people are obstructing her work by gathering in front of the VC's office. They are not allowing the VC to check the files or sign the graduation certificates of students. The VC is unable to function properly due to the non-cooperation of the university staff. Even the top officials turned their backs on the temporary VC. The protesters are playing with the future of students who are not parties to this issue in any way. This also affects the reputation of the Technological university.
