THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the SilverLine frozen by the government, K-Rail's focus will now be on making the Angamaly-Erumeli Sabari rail a reality. The Centre is planning to build Angamali-Erumeli Sabari rail under Prime Minister's Gati Shakti Mission. K-Rail is revising the project document based on new safety and construction guidelines.

The government has also entrusted K-Rail with the task of obtaining Karnataka's permission to survey the Thalassery-Mysore rail line and the Nilambur-Nanchankodu line and take further steps. K-Rail is also tasked with constructing flyovers at 27 level crossings. K-Rail is a company formed by the Railways and the State Government.

Although Sabari rail path was announced in 1997, out of total 111 km, only the 7 km rail line in Angamaly-Kalady section and the flyover in Periyar were built. Kalady-Erumeli 104 km line is to be constructed. 20 years ago, the purchase and sale of land of 900 people was frozen. They cannot sell or mortgage land. If the land is acquired, they will get compensation. The cost of land acquisition is more than Rs 900 crores. As per rules, Railways has to pay 30% of the land price as establishment charge. The cabinet has decided to avoid it.

As per new estimate, the project will cost Rs 3700 crore. The state government has informed that they will bear half of the cost and the construction will be entrusted to K-Rail. Out of 111 km long line, 13 km will be tunnel at several places.
