kk

KOTTAYAM: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's visit to Kottayam district, which became controversial following objections raised by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and DCC President Nattakom Suresh, was met with enthusiasm by ordinary workers. While frontline leaders stayed away, ordinary workers and youth participated enthusiastically. The presence of Oommen Chandy's supporters from various parts, including Puthupally, was also noticeable. Tharoor, who also visited Pala Bishop, received a hearty welcome at Prof KM Chandy's commemoration ceremony at Pala. Dr Cyriac Thomas, the chief organizer of the function and former VC of MG University, described Tharoor as the dream Chief Minister. Later, the Youth Congress district committee organized a function for Tharoor in Eratupetta under the name of 'To become today's guard against communal fascism'. Tharoor was escorted to the venue in an open jeep.

Even when prominent leaders, including Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and KC Joseph, stayed away, Anto Antony MP was there with Tharoor. Youth Congress district president Chintu Kurian Joy, a supporter of Oommen Chandy, was the chief organizer. Before Tharoor's arrival, the local leaders of Eratupetta enumerated the achievements of the Oommen Chandy government. But Tharoor's request was to end all controversies and move forward unitedly. Tharoor criticized the BJP's communal policies and added that the role of the Muslim community cannot be forgotten in India's growth.
