Denied bike as dowry, groom flees from marriage venue

LUCKNOW: Although dowry is prohibited by law, many girls still suffer in the name of it. A groom ran away from the marriage venue after the bride's family refused to give him a bike as dowry. Th incident happened in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki. After the marriage was called off, the bride's family lodged a complaint with the police. The bride told police that she would commit suicide if the marriage did not take place. The police were not ready to take strong action in the case.

The marriage was fixed on December 2 with a groom from Mawai in Ayodhya. The tilaka ceremony in which a gold ring and Rs 5,000 were handed over, the groom demanded a bike as dowry. However, the bride's family was not ready for this due to financial difficulties. A dispute broke out between the two following this. Soon the groom ran away from the venue.

After the marriage was called off, the bride's family approached the police with a complaint. However, it is alleged that the police are late in taking action. Meantime, the police revealed that a complaint has been received and an investigation is underway.
