KOCHI: The artists in Gothuruth are performing the tale of Lord Ayyappa through Chavittu Natakam. This is the first time that a Hindu mythological story is being told in the Christian dance form. The story of Ayyappa was performed in the Muthukunnam temple ground.
This story was born out of the thought of Chavittu Nataka Academy officials in Gothuruth to give a secular dimension to the art form. Academy ward winner Joseph Salim was the teacher and the practice was for six months.
The story from Raja of Pandalam getting Manikandan from the forest to his stay at Sabarimala is presented in 1 hour and 45 minutes. In the early days, the Chavittu Natakam, which started at night, would continue till the morning of the next day.
