THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister J Chinchu Rani said in the Assembly that 24 people have died due to stray dog bites in the state this year. Six of them had gotten anti-rabies vaccinations. The minister responded to P Ubaidullah, KPA Majeed, Manjalamkuzhi Ali, Prof. Abid Hussain Thangal, and others by stating that there is no scarcity of anti-rabies vaccination in the state and that the vaccine's high quality was confirmed in a test at the central laboratory.

"8,355 people were bitten by stray dogs in the state in September. In October, the number decreased to 7,542. The anti-rabies vaccination of stray dogs was started on September 20. 11,651 stray dogs and 3,38,938 domestic dogs were vaccinated after September 1. The vaccine is being procured as part of the Rabies Free Kerala project using central funds. In the past six years, 79,859 stray dogs have been sterilised, and 9001 dogs have undergone the procedure since April. Apart from the existing 18 sterilization centers in the state, 37 more centers will be started. Although Kudumbashree was in charge of sterilization, it has been suspended for two years following a court order. This has led to an increase in the number of street dogs," the minister said.
