KOLLAM: The Kerala High Court dismissed the plea of Kiran Kumar, accused in the Vismaya case, seeking suspension of his sentence. The court clarified that the sentence will not be suspended. His plea was rejected by a division bench led by Justices Alexander Thomas and Sophy Thomas. The accused demanded to suspend the sentence till a decision is taken on the plea demanding cancellation of the trial court’s order.
The court sentenced Kiran on May 24 following the suicide of his wife Vismaya over dowry harassment. Kiran is presently lodged in Poojapura Central Jail. Kumar was booked for charges under Sections 498A (subjecting a woman to cruelty for dowry), 306 (abetment of suicide) and 304B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. There are 42 witnesses, 120 documents and 12 mainours in the case.
Vismaya was found hanging at her husband’s house in Sasthamcotta on June 21 in 2021. The trial in the case started on January 10. The main witnesses in the case are her father Thrivikraman Nair and brother Vijith.
