LONDON: Nirav Modi’s attempt to appeal in the UK Supreme court his extradition to India has failed. 51-year-old Nirav Modi is the prime accused in Rs 11,000-crore Punjab National Bank scam.
He fled India when details about the fraud came out and various agencies took up the investigation. Nirav Modi was arrested in London in March, 2019. His lawyer argued that Modi is severely depressed and suicidal and it will get worse if he is shifted to India.
Last month, Nirav Modi's plea was rejected by the London High Court. The Indian government had assured that Nirav Modi would be given adequate medical care in the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.
The next option before Nirav Modi was to approach the UK Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court can only be approached if the High Court agrees that the case is of public importance. Nirav Modi's only option is to approach the European Court of Human Rights. Nirav Modi has been in London jail since March 2019.
