COLOMBO: India lends a helping hand to Sri Lanka which is struggling due to financial crisis. India has handed over 125 Mahindra SUVs to Sri Lanka’s police department. India's support is to address the serious mobility restriction faced by the police without enough vehicles. Mahindra's Scorpio Classic was given as part of this.
India has provided Sri Lanka financial assistance of four billion US dollars for food, health, and energy. This includes the supply of medicines and kerosene. Sri Lanka quickly plunged into debt due to wrong administrative measures. At one point, Sri Lanka was a puppet in the hands of the Rajapaksa family. This opportunity was used by countries including China. It was the wrong policies of the government that plunged the country into chaos and bankruptcy. The government has borrowed more than the country's GDP which has put the country in a debt trap. Borrowing with high-interest rates and short tenure also backfired.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa made many promises during the election campaign to capture power. Big tax cuts were announced as part of this. But the country's economy collapsed when tourism, the country's primary source of income, suffered heavy losses due to Covid. Sri Lanka suffered a setback due to the loss of foreign exchange and was unable to import essential commodities including fuel.
