KANNUR: Julie Mathew is the daughter-in-law of the hilly village of Bheemanady in Kasaragod and a native of Thiruvalla. She will take oath as the judge of Fort Bend County in Texas for the second time tomorrow. She will assume office from her house at Bheemanady.
Julie won with 3500 votes to become the judge after the sole woman judge retired from the county court. She is a native of Vennikullam in Pathanamthitta and daughter of Thomas Daniel and Sussama. Julie along with her brother reached the US in 1980.
After reaching Philadelphia, she completed her high school and took her undergraduate degree from Pen State University. She also completed her law studies and worked as an attorney for fifteen years.
Julie first became judge in 2018. Her score in the exams and her caliber during her time as attorney made her achieve the position. The tenure is for four years. Julie Mathew might be the first woman of color at the County’s number three courtroom.
Jimmy Mathew is Julie’s husband and the couple have three children.
