Captain Shiva Chauhan creates history becomes first woman officer to be deployed at Siachen

NEW DELHI: Captain Shiva Chauhan of the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury crops has created history by becoming the first woman officer to be deployed at the world’s highest battleground in Siachen.

The Fire and Fury Corps informed that Shiva was posted in Siachen after completing rigorous training. The posting will be for three months at Kumar Post, headquarters of the North Glacier Battalion, located at an altitude of 15,632 feet. Shiva, who started his mission in Siachen on January 2, will be the leader of a team.

With this, Captain Shiva has earned a place for herself in the prestigious list of Indian women in the force.

Captain Shiva Chauhan, a native of Rajasthan, wanted to join the army since her childhood. Shiva was brought up by her mother, when her father died at the age of 11. After graduating in civil engineering from NJR Institute of Technology, Udaipur, she turned down other job offers. After training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, she joined the Engineer Regiment as a Commissioned Officer in May 2021.

Shiva performed well during OTA training. Her performance was noted when she led male soldiers of Sura-Soi Engineer Regiment in a 508 km cycling expedition from Siachen War Memorial to Kargil War Memorial on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Divas in July 2022. She was then selected for training at the Siachen Warfare School. There she had undergone rigorous training to climb mountains, survive avalanches and crevasses in glaciers, conduct rescue operations, and more. As the first woman officer in Siachen, where the winters are as cold as minus 60 degrees, the force has prepared a special tent for Shiva with all facilities including a toilet.
