KYIV: A military surgeon in Ukraine successfully removed a live grenade from near the soldier's chest. The VOG grenade which was fired from a grenade launcher penetrated the soldier's torso and Dr. Andrii Verba had to perform the surgery knowing the grenade could explode at any time. The Ukrainian army released an X-ray image showing a grenade in the soldier's chest. Another image of the doctor holding the grenade after the successful surgery was also released.
The army had warned the doctor that the explosive could detonate. But regardless of this, Major General Verba was ready for surgery. The operation was completed in the presence of two soldiers. The grenade attack came as Russia stepped up its offensive in the town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine.
