THIRUVNANANTHAPURAM: The main accused in the case in which a country bomb was hurled at the police when they came to nab the suspects for abducting a youth for ransom at Paichira in Mangalapuram in the capital city, has been arrested. The arrested is Shafeeq (25) of Shafeeq Manzial at Paichira in Mangalapuram. The locals in Aryanad caught him and handed him over to the police.

When the owner seeing Shafeeq and his aides in the house under construction questioned them, they beat him and threw him into the well. The locals who rushed to the spot hearing the yells of the owner, caught and handed him over to the police. The police were not able to nab Abin, who was with him.

The accused had hurled a country bomb at the police when they came to nab the goonda team. The mother of the goons injured the policemen, who miraculously escaped from the bomb, with an axe. The dramatic incidents happened last Friday. The goon who threw the bomb and his mother were arrested later. Sheeja (44) and her son Shameer (23) were arrested. Shafeeq, who was on the run, was arrested today.

A 11-member team including Shafeeq and his brother Shameer had abducted Nikhil Robert of Puthenthoope over some financial dealings, beat him brutally and then abandoned him on the road. Nikhil had later sought treatment in the hospital. The police registered a case and when they reached their house at Paichira to nab them, the brothers hurled a bomb at them. The police escaped as the bomb did not explode. In between, their mother came with an axe to hack them.

Shafeeq managed to escape but the police were able to nab Shameer and his mother Sheeja. The axe was also taken into custody. Meanwhile, Shameer attempted suicide when brought to Mangalapuram station. He tried to slit his neck using a blade he had hid beneath his tongue. He is undergoing treatment in the Government Medical College Hospital here. Though Shameer was subjected to a bodily examination before he was put in the lockup, the blade hid was not noticed.
