THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Higher Education Minister R Bindu said that KR Narayanan Institute Director Shankar Mohan announced his resignation as the department was about to implement the report submitted by the inquiry committee on the caste discrimination issue. However, the minister did not respond to the question of whether the allegations of caste discrimination levelled against Shankar Mohan by students and sanitation workers were true. She also said that both the committees which conducted an investigation on the students' complaints submitted reports with similar contents.

Shankar Mohan announced his resignation while the students' strike against the director of the institute has been going on for more than a month, According to the protesting students, Shankar Mohan's resignation marks a success for their strike. The students, however, added that they will not call an end to the strike with the announcement of Shankar Mohan's resignation. According to sources, the institute's chairman, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, is unhappy with the strike prolonging.
