CPM suspends Municipal councillor for swindling elderly woman's land, money and jewellery

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM has suspended a Municipal councillor for cheating an old woman and swindling her 12 and a half cents of land, 17 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 2 lakh. Thavaravila ward councillor Sujin of the Neyyattinkara Municipality has been suspended. It was the Neyyattinkara CPM area committee meeting that took a decision in this regard. Earlier, the police had registered a case against Sujin and his wife and launched an investigation into the incident.

As per the complaint, Sujin cheated a 78-year-woman named Baby who lived alone in her home within the limits of the Marayamuttom police station. Sujin and his family had stayed at Baby's home for several months. Baby, an unmarried woman, became alone with the death of her parents and siblings. Sujin started living here with his family in February 2021 by promising Baby that they would protect her.

In her complaint, Baby alleged that Sujin's wife Geethu used many of her ornaments kept in the almirah. Later, some of these ornaments were mortgaged and some were sold. "After eight months, Sujin and his family members left my house, claiming they were heading to the hospital. Neither did they return home nor did they return my ornaments," stated Baby.

It is also alleged that Sujin had transferred 12 and a half-cent land belonging to Baby to his wife Geethu's name. "Sujin and his wife had swindled nearly Rs 2 lakhs from me while staying here. They haven't returned the money despite several requests," she added. Baby then met the Neyyatinkara municipal chairman and filed a complaint. Although the chairman called both parties and spoke to them, Sujin did not agree to return the money and ornaments. Following this, Baby lodged a complaint with the Marayamuttam police.
