THRISSUR: Jackfruit can be vital in the making of many edibles in our day-to-day life. The prominence of the big fruit is nothing new for the people in Kerala. But, what if we say like jackfruit can give birth to organic plastics and electricity of all things? Yes, two ingenious minds from Fathima matha school in Idukki have made this opening into the world. AHsana Aliyar and Mary Rose Aby of class 9th made public their invention at the southern India science fair held at Thrissur.

The starch from jackfruit will be carved out for making organic-level plastics. The plastic after use, if passed through a steam turbine can produce electricity, claims both Ahasana and Mary Rose. Earlier, in the state-conducted science fair, the duo for their invention got a deserved A grade.

It is estimated that in Kerala, annually almost 600 crores worth of jackfruit are wasted for no reason at all. The finding from the students is a revelation of how vital the big green fruit is.
