NEW DELHI: Former Union Law Minister and senior Supreme Court advocate Shanti Bhushan passed away on Tuesday. He was 97 years old. Bhushan served as the law minister in the Morarji Desai-led Janata Party government from 1977 to 1979, which came to power after the Emergency. Shanti Bhushan was one of the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Shanti Bhushan represented petitioner Raj Narain in the Allahabad High Court in a famous case in which the election of then prime minister Indira Gandhi was annulled for committing electoral malpractices. A state of emergency was declared in the country after the events that followed this judgment. Shanti Bhushan, who was a Rajya Sabha member from 1977 to 1980, joined the BJP in 1980. But he quit the party in 1986.
