THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dr. Sibi Mathews, investigation officer of ISRO espionage has come forward with more revelations on why only Nambi Narayanan was arrested out of 3000 scientists in connection with the spy case. Sibi Mathews is reacting for the first time post the Supreme Court verdict that granted exemplary compensation of Rs 50 lakh to Nambi Narayanan. The court had also directed to investigate the role of the Kerala police officers, who were involved in falsely implicating the scientist under the Official Secrets Act.

“Nambi Narayanan submitted a request for voluntary retirement on 1994 November 1 following the arrest of Mariam Rasheeda. What was the motive behind this? Nambi Narayanan had used a land phone connection in his house in the name of Kurian Kalathil, a railway contractor. His phone bill during that time was about Rs 44,498. He had called many ISD calls. He has not yet revealed why a responsible officer like him made all these ISD calls. The police have the bills with them. However, CBI did not use these evidences effectively.  ISRO spy case was registered on the basis of the information that some ISRO scientists had regularly met two women from Maldives. If there is an involvement of US spy agency in this case, why could not the CBI find it earlier? Not only are the police officers behind the arrest. The arrest was made after discussing with high officials of state police and central intelligence. Therefore, it is not right to put all the blame on a single officer”, said Sibi Mathews.
