THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police have started installing remote monitoring CCTV cameras in police stations and the cameras will function 24X7.

This is an ‘after effect’ of Varappuzha custody death and the first set of cameras have already been set up at Ernakulam City-Rural police district stations.

In the offices of Ernakulam rural city police chiefs, 274 cameras and monitoring arrangements are in place. The facility will help district police chiefs be informed of incidents happening in police stations simultaneously.

Tendering procedures fixed at more than Rs 1 crore are progressing for the second phase of installation. Meanwhile, in Museum police station also cameras have been installed on experimental basis.

Once the remaining technical jobs are completed, Museum police station will come under the eye of Commissioner and DGP.

With the installation of cameras, police aims at bringing in more efficacy in police force, close monitoring of developments in police stations, and check corruption, police highhandedness, custodial torture and special consideration given to politicians in police stations.
