KOZHIKODE: A study report reveals that the number of persons who died of Nipah infection in Malappuram-Kozhikode districts is 21. 23 persons were affected.
State health department had come out with the report that 19 people were affected, 17 died and two survived the infection. But it is the study report published in British Medical Journal and The Journal of Infectious diseases that contradicts this statistics.
In the report it is said that the first person who died of Nipah was health department staff and radiology assistant Sudha (Kozhikode Medical College). Her family has also confirmed this. The report clarifies that it was not health department staff nurse Lini who first died due to the infection.
Meanwhile Health Minister K K Shailaja said only there were 18 confirmed cases of Nipah deaths and the rest are speculations.
“Five cases which manifested Nipah infection symptoms may be Nipah cases but it can be confirmed only after the examination report is out,” she said.
