KOZHIKODE: SDPI and IUML activists have threatened students for staging a drama alleging that the play has anti-religion elements in it. 'Kithab', staged by students of Memunda Higher Secondary School had won first prize in Kozhikode district youth festival. This is play based on the story 'Vanku' by Unni R. The story revolves around a Muslim girl who wants to perform 'vanku' (prayer that is usually performed five times in a mosque).
The religious organizations have claimed that the drama is against the Islamic beliefs. SDPI, Muslim Youth League, SKSSF and Solidarity have come forward against the drama. They claim that the drama staged by the students is intentionally disgracing the religion.
SKSSF has staged a protest pointing that such activities cannot be allowed in the name of freedom of expression. Solidarity has demanded to taken an action against the drama and to cancel the result. The director Rafeeq Kalamassery said that the drama is a portrayal of the present situation of Muslim community and Muslim women. The school officials have clarified that they have decided to go forward with the drama and that they will present the drama at the state youth festival.
