NEW DELHI: Union Home secretary Rajiv Gowba has recomended to grant Rs 2500 crore as additional aid for the rehabilitation of flood hit Kerala. The financial aid announced by the central government is an additional amount to the already declared Rs 600 crore. The total amount will thus become Rs 3100 crore. Kerala had demanded 4800 crore. However, as per the reports submitted by World Bank and agencies under United Nations, Kerala requires Rs 31,000 crore for rebuilding the state. The report was prepared after an evaluation by a team headed by special secretary B.R. Sharma.

Kerala will receive the financial aid following the approval of a higher committee presided by Union Home minister. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had sent a letter to Union Minister Rajnath Singh seeking immediate help for the state. The higher committee had approved a financial aid of Rs 546 for Karnataka on November 19.

States seeking for financial aid after a disaster to follow the rules and criterias in order to get an amount close to the requested figure, reads a circular issued by Joint secretary Sanjeev K. Jindal. Kerala had requested Rs 4800 crores while the Central government will only grant Rs 3100 crores.
