kerala-floods

We should realise the politics behind Central Government’s reluctance to help Kerala after the floods. Not only they haven’t helped Kerala like they should, they also blocked the state from gathering funds through other means.

The Centre have asked the state to pay up Rs. 34 crores for rescue operations conducted by the Air Force during the floods. They have also charged Rs 260 crores for ration. This is similar to hourly fares charged by taxis. It might be okay as per the rule but the common man won’t be able to digest it. It’s the duty of forces of army to help people in distress. We cannot call anyone else for help at such times. There is enough funds with the Centre to help states at times of such disasters. It has been four months since the floods hit Kerala. There is a need of Rs 31000 crores in order to rebuild the state. CMDRF received Rs 2683 crore won’t be remotely enough. At this difficult juncture the Centre is asking the state to pay Rs 34 crores for rescue operations. The state had requested Rs 5616 crores as flood relief twice. Apart from Rs 600 crores that the state received as initial relief, nothing came. The Central government that has helped other states during such disasters is turning a blind eye towards Kerala.

The Central has also blocked helps from outside the nation. Nations including UAE offered help but it was blocked. Some people thought that all this will be compensated by the Central Government. Weren’t the people who came to power with people’s vote responsible for these atrocious acts? It’s the responsibility of the government to help their citizen at times of distress. The government have all the power to get rid of rules that aren’t helping. The political parties aren’t uttering a single word to help the cause. It’s times like these unity prevails over anything.
