What happened to the BJP in the recent Assembly elections is that any party, which feels proud and overconfident in their unquestionable power, would face. The blow the party got now will turn out to be a harsh challenge to it in the Lok Sabha election that will take place after four months.

The results of the Assembly elections in five states, which are also seen as the semi-final of the Lok Sabha election, show the comeback of the Congress, which had gone far away from the minds of the people. The poll result is also an outcome of the resentment a large section of people, who were inconvenienced by non-populist policies and steps taken by the Central government. The opinion polls in certain states had hinted at this kind of results.

Though certain top BJP leaders say that it is differing circumstances in each state that influence the poll results and it not a big backlash, they will have to accept the fact that the poll result is a big blow to their party.

In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP had been in power for continuous 15 years. Though CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan was an efficient ruler, his anti-people policies backfired. The fate of Chhattisgarh BJP is also no different. The party which had won three terms continuously and got 49 out of 90 seats last time didn’t get half that number this time.

On the other hand, the Congress scored well. In Rajasthan, Vijaya Raje Scindia had cruised into the election scene, brushing aside frowns with in the State BJP. Nobody had any expectation that Scindia would give a second term to the BJP. That exactly happened but as in Madhya Pradesh, the party was able to win some seats.

If anti-government sentiments proved fatal for BJP in Chahattissgarh and Madhya Pradesh, in Mizoram the Congress had to face that fate. 10 yr chief minister Lal Thanhawla and his government was uprooted by the people. Mizo National fronts will now form the new government with a big mandate. With the loss of Mizoram governance, the Congress now remains completely effaced from North East States.

In the five Assembly elections, it was Telangana TRS that won the most glistening victory. TRS’ victory endorses TRS leader Chandrasekhar Rao’s decision to dissolve the assembly before its term expired and conduct the election. Neither Congress nor the grand alliance that included TDP could make any benefits here.

The Congress victory will give a fillip to the collective of 21 parties that met in New Delhi on the eve of vote-counting. This is the first ever biggest victory of Congress ever since Rahul was anointed the Congress president.

This victory also underlines the relevance of the grand alliance of big and small non-BJP parties that was formed to counter Narendra Modi and BJP. Though BSP leader Mayawati stayed away from the Delhi meeting, she came forward to extend her party’s support to the formation of Congress government in Madhya Pradesh. This turn of event is noteworthy.
Similarly Samajwadi party leader Akhilesh Yadav has also expressed his wish for getting closer to the alliance.

The new political scenario would force the BJP, which is blinded by frequent victories in earlier elections, to sit back and think. The main reason for BJP’s defeat is that several steps taken by the Central government repeatedly pushed people to the side of its enemies. There are many other reasons though.

The election result once again shows that people who tolerate and forgive everything are not donkeys. In democracy people are the kings.
