VALLIKUNNAM: Thoppil Ajayan (66), director of the acclaimed film ‘Perunthachan’ and son of renowned dramatist Thoppil Bhasi and Ammaniyamma, passed away on Thursday. He was under treatment for cancer. According to the doctors, he died from a cardiac arrest. His body will be kept for public viewing on Saturday, from 7.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. at Kalabhavan theatre, Vazhuthacaud. Funeral will take place at 4 p.m.
Ajayan completed his primary education at KKM Govt. Higher Secondary School. He later attended Mar Ivanios College, Thriuvananthapuram for pre-degree and at S.D. College, Alappzuha for degree studies. He wanted to study photography but was enrolled at Adyar Film Institute for direction. He then assisted Bharathan in several films. Ajayan was awarded Indira Gandhi Award for best debutant director for his film ‘Perunthachan’.
‘Perunthachan’ is the one and only film directed by Ajayan. He withdrew himself from the film industry after this. ‘Perunthachan’ also received National Award.
