NEW DELHI: The revised bill to make instant Triple Talaq a punishable offence was passed by a voice vote in the Lok Sabha on Thursday after five-hour debate,
The Triple Talaq is the practice of Muslim men instantly divorcing their wives by uttering "Talaq" three times.

Soon after the debate , a walkout was staged by the Congress and the AIADMK.

The opposition parties, which are against criminalising the act, want a parliamentary committee to scrutinise the bill. The government said the Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment last year, had ruled instant Triple Talaq "unconstitutional" and "arbitrary".

Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad urged the lawmakers not to see the bill through the "prism of politics" but of humanity.
