THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hartal called by Sabarimala Karma Samithi turned violent in the northern districts of Kerala.
Bombs were thrown at Dinesh beedi company near Kolassery in Kannur. However it didn’t explode. At Payyanur Edat, stones were pelted at KSRTC buses. Fights erupted at many places over closing of shops. Around 20 BJP activists were arrested in relation with violent protests. Vehicle of Thanal, a non-profit organization was destroyed at Thalikkavu. At Caltex junction, CPM activists and pro hartal activists had a go at each other.
Shop of BJP Kannur district President, N Haridas, was attacked at Thiruvangad Kallayitheruv. Attackers further targeted Haridas’ house and destroyed several home appliances. Haridas’ wife and daughter was injured in the incident.
Mittayitheruv became a war zone
Kozhikkode Mittayitheruv turned into a war zone between police and pro hartal activists. Glasses of several shops were wrecked. Weapons were found at Ganapthy Mariyamman Temple in Mittayitheruv. Vishwa Hindu Parishath office is inside the same property. Several shops were shut by pro hartal activists. Police tried to clear the area and stones were at them by pro hartal activists. Police had to use tear gas.
Protests turned violent at different places in Kasaragod. CPM activists were mainly targeted by pro hartal activists. Six KSRTC buses were wrecked in stone pelting. BJP office at Nileswaram was ruined.
Street fight at Palakkad
At Palakkad, hartal turned into a stage for street fight between BJP and CPM activists. Several people were left injured in fights and police lathi-charge. Policemen also got injured. News18 reporter Prasad Udumbassery was injured. About 40 aggressors were arrested.
CPI district committee office was subject to attacks from pro-hartal activists. In a display of strength between the parties, CPM and BJP district committee offices were attacked. A library under CPM supervision was burned down by aggressors. 15 policemen were injured at Ottappalam. Police vehicle was wrecked protestors. Vyapari Vyavasayi office at Thathamangalam was subject to stone pelting.
There were conflicts at Palakkad Victoria College as police used grenade and tear gas to bring the situation under control. Police are stationed at different parts of the city late into night.
Three people shanked at Thrissur
BJP activists Sujith, Ratheesh and Krishnankutty was shanked at Thrissur Vadanappally. Windows panes of CPM office at Vadakkanchery was destroyed. KSRTC bus stationed near Shakthan stand was subject to attacks.
CPM activists and Sabarimala Karma Samithi activists clashed in Malappuram district. Several policemen were injured in the attacks. Around 100 protestors were arrested.
Attackers tried to burn down CPM branch committee office at Thavanur. Ground floor was completely destroyed in the fire.
Certain shop owners tried to open shops with CPM support at Edappal. It led to a clash between BJP and CPM activists. Police used grenade four times. Four policemen were injured in the protests.
