THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 48-hour national strike called by joint trade unions against anti-labour policies of the union government has hit normal life in the state. Rail services were hit in many places in the first eight hours. Jan Shatabdi Express and Raptisagar Express are being blocked. The Venad Express which was to leave at 5 am was delayed by one and a half hours. Chennai Mail is being blocked in Thripunithura. Sabari Express is also being delayed.
Many services of the KSRTC were disrupted in many places. Only KSRTC services to Pampa are now being operated. Private buses remained off the roads. Normal life would be paralysed as teachers, bank employees, petrol pump workers and small traders are all on strike.
Hospitals, airports, marriages and tourism sectors have been exempted from the strike. Vehicles carrying milk and newspapers would not be blocked. Sabarimala pilgrimage would not be disrupted. The strike is being observed on various demands like make minimum wage of Rs 18,000 and social security schemes, among others.
