KOLLAM: In a case in which three youths were severely hacked, Kollam district additional court on Wednesday sentenced six SDPI men to ten years’ imprisonment.

The convicts are Kollam Kadappakada Makkani natives Babu, Shemeer, Imamudhin, Sudheer, Jalaludhin and Bilal alias Ligar. They have also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh.

The incident related to the case happened near Kadappakada fire station in 2013. The youth who were attacked were Nizamuddhin, Muhammed Shafi and Mathew.

Kollam East police had filed the case against the SDPI men and in the charge sheet filed, they are implicated for attempt to murder, harming using dangerous weapons, illegal assembling and conspiracy. Kerala police Arms Act had also been invoked against them.

What led to the attack was reluctance shown by Nizanuddhin to join SDPI.

On the day of the incident, three youth reached near the fire station in an auto-rickshaw and three started walking off in three directions. It was Nizamuddhin who was first attacked. Muhammed Shafi and Mathew rushed to him after hearing his loud cries and they were also attacked.

Muhammed Shafi had been under treatment in Kollam district hospital and private hospitals in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram for about six months.
