KOZHIKKODE: Ready for discussion regarding mining at Alappad, says Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma. “Industries department should take the initiative for this. Government’s stand is against unscientific mining”, said Mercykutty Amma.
“Government have taken steps to protect the shore”, she added.
Report stating the magnitude of problems at Alappad due to mining was ignored. Indian Rare Earth and Kerala Minerals and Metals are in charge of mining here. There were reports pointing out the faults of these companies. Environmental committee’s suggestion to appoint a supervision committee was never realized.
Alappad Village, once spread over 89 sqkm between the TS Canal and Arabian Sea, has dwindled to just 7.6 sqkm in 60 years primarily due to mining.
