THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Father left her years ago. Mother passed away to kidney related disease. In a life where everything turned against her, Meera is suffering from the same disease that killed her mother. She had to stop B.Com studies midway as both her kidneys failed. But she is still hopeful. She crafts decorative items and flowers with papers and sells it for a living.
Meera is the younger of the two children of late Suseela. When her husband left her with two small kids, Suseela didn’t wear out. She did several small jobs for her kids. She ignored her physical discomforts. But three years back, her body was covered with swelling. On diagnosis, it was found out that both her kidneys had failed. Veena was a constant present near her mother at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. She was a 2nd year B.Com student at the time. She thought that her lost classes could be covered later. One week after Suseela was brought home, Veena’s body started swelling, just like her mother. Doctors said that her situation could be cured with two or three dialysis; but that wasn’t the case.
Suseela passed away last January. Her brother who left for Gujarat in search of a job, stopped contacting her.
Veena is now sheltered by a Panchayat built house in a 10 acre plot. She makes her living with the help of locals and relatives. Doctors have suggested a kidney transplant for her. For that she needs a donor with an O positive blood group. She is hopeful that someone would lend her hand in this difficult time.
