Supreme Court has annulled the election victory of Karat Razaq in Koduvally assembly in Kozhikode. However, the court later stayed the verdict so that Razaq gets sufficient time to submit an appeal in the Supreme Court. The court has stayed the verdict for one month.

The high court had earlier annulled IUML MLA K.M.Shaji’s victory from Azheekode assembly. The court has not settled the case yet. K Surendran’s failure in Manjeswaram to IUML’s Abdul Razaq is also in court. The verdict of this case will not have an effect as Abdul Razaq passed away last year.

Such petitions are being filed in connection with the malpractices during campaign and election. Many candidates violate the law during campaign. However, it is not at all right to campaign using caste and religion. This happens when leaders of political parties get excited during the time. Leaders fall in traps because of their party worker’s ignorance. K M Shaji and Karat Razaq is an example for this.

The petition against the Karat Razak was filed by K.P. Mohammed, a voter in the Koduvally assembly constituency in Kozhikode district. According to Mohammed's counsel, during the 2016 election campaign, a 20 minute video was widely circulated in the constituency by Karat Razak against his Indian Union Muslim League opponent. The court held it was in violation of the Representation of People's Act and comes under "corrupt practice" and disqualified Karat Razak. Karat Razak, who is himself a former IUML member, had defeated M.A. Razak by a margin of 573 votes. Karat Razak was backed by the CPIM led LDF.

K M Shaji also faces similar charges. He is accused of spreading pamphlets in the name of religion. The court had declared complaint lodged by Nikesh Kumar valid. Such cases should be
