In a special examination carried out by City police on Tuesday and Wednesday, around 70 persons accused in various cases were caught.

About 200 people were also caught for traffic violations. The operation titled Operation Cobra should be made a regular police action in the present circumstance, since the ongoing traffic violations and increasing crimes in the city demand serious police intervention.

Among the many steps taken by the police to ensure peaceful life for citizens, police action like Operation Cobra has special importance. Undisciplined transport vehicles in the city is a menace for not only those who use them but also for all city dwellers.

Vehicle accidents are increasing day by as also death cases. Virtually, not even a day passes by without an accident.

The main aim of Operation Cobra was to make commuters strictly follow traffic rules. On the first day of Operation Cobra itself, more than 170 people were caught from various centres for traffic violations.

Most people were caught for offences like drunk driving, helmetless driving, over-speeding, illegal alteration of vehicles. Such kind of traffic violations are happening not only in the capital city but also in different parts of the State.

It is high time that special department for traffic section in the police was intensified ten times. The present department for traffic lack the capacity to handle the increasing traffic responsibilities. Their jurisdiction is confined to cities. Though there is a centralised system to control traffic from anywhere, just a march by a group of 1000 people brings the city traffic to a standstill.

The absence of scientific traffic control system is the reason for this. There should be a realisation that implementation of traffic rules should not be a mere stress on wearing helmet or seat belt. The blatant violation of traffic rules on road is what that should be taken note of. It often goes unnoticed.

Over-speeding vehicle drivers get caught only in junctions where there are functioning CCTVs. There are many who over-speed through heavy traffic and overtake in the wrong direction. Parking on footpaths and riding two-wheelers on the footpath have endangered the lives of pedestrians.

The police often overlook such kind of traffic violations. Every year more than 4000 people meet with untimely death due to road accident in the State. The government should strictly implement road rules and seek possibilities for improving traffic arrangements.

It is easy to wait deceptively at unnoticeable way sides, intercept helmetless or drunk drivers and fine them. But, the traffic rules become meaningful only when those ruffians who challenge the law and create terror on roads are caught and penalised.

If the police team who come out for vehicle inspection focus on this part, the number of accidents can be reduced. People, especially new generation youths, have to understand that the public road is not the place to show off their adventure. Thus, vehicle inspection and implementation of traffic rules should not limit to just levying petty fines.
