MOOLAMATTOM: Father who jumped into a canal to rescue his child ended up giving up his own life. Pradeepan (45) from Kasaragod Niravadi is the deceased. Incident was around 11.30 a.m. Pradeepan and family was on a visit at a relative’s residence at Moolamattom.
Pradeepan’s younger child Pournami (11) was caught by water current while bathing. He jumped into the canal and while trying to rescue the child, he was also caught by the current.
Meanwhile, Pradeepan’s wife Radha informed the nearby forest office. Forest officers rushed to the spot and threw a rope to Pradeepan. But he was not able to catch it. Pradeepan who got exhausted, pushed his daughter to the canal side and drowned. The child was able to hold on to a tree branch by the side and was later rescued by an AKG colony resident Ranjith. Fire force officers who reached the spot took Ranjith and the child to safety. Pradeepan was then taken to a private hospital in Moolamattom by locals and fire force officials but couldn’t save his life. The dead body was handed over to relatives after autopsy. Funeral will be at Kasaragod.
