THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: When it was told that only new dresses will be accepted to flood relief camps, Mohanakumar and Sreelekha had some old sarees with them. They had collected it from many people as part of the disaster relief activity. At last, they decided to make designer bags using sarees and it went to be a huge success. Mohanakumar and Sreelekha are running a shop that sells products of Cashew nut Development Corporation in Plamoottu, Pattom. They gave the saree bag for customers for free. Customers became happy and wanted them to teach on how to make the bags. Sreelekha is ready to teach everyone to make these saree bags. One old saree, Rs. 100 and the mindset not to use plastic carry bags are more than enough to make these bags. Ladies purse and pencil pouch can also be made in such a manner.
Customers are saying that these designer bags can be used as an alternative to plastic bags. Mohanakumar has met the chief minister with a plea seeking to use cloth bags as an alternative to plastic bags. ‌Haritha Kerala Mission is appointed to study the prospects of the idea, said Mohanakumar.
