KALPETTA: That mother can never believe that she would never again hear his son’s voice. Just two hours before army jawan Vasanth Kumar attained martyrdom in Pulwana terror attack, he had called up mother to say that his training was over and the climate was very chilly. And everything else was fine.
Wayanad native Vasath kumar reached his home town just on February 2 and a week ago he left for Kashmir. He was given a short break before battalion change. It was an opportunity for him to come home, meet his kin, friends and return. But he nor his family never guessed that it would be his last visit home and he would never come back.
Vasanth Kumar was the pillar of his family ever since the death of his father one year ago. His wife Sheena just had only a temporary job in Veterinary University. Elder daughter Anamika is in Std 3 and younger son Amritha Deep is a UKG student. There is also his sister Vasumitha at home.
Wife Sheena is totally heartbroken and she had been inconsolably weeping ever since the family received the news of his death from Delhi army office in the morning.
Vasanth was about to join a battalion in Srinagar as Havildar after 18 years of service. Just two years’ service was left. The mortal remains of the solider will be flown to Kozhikode from New Delhi on Saturday morning and it will be taken to his home. Vasanth Kumar, born in an SC Mullukuruma community, will be laid to rest at Thrikkaipatti Mukkam Kunnu Samudaya crematorium in the evening with full state honours.
