THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amidst a dispute on the selection process of film awards, irate jury chairman Kumar Sahni walked out of the hall. Efforts to pacify him failed and he refused to attend the press meet convened here today.

There were differences of opinion among jury members over the main awards like best film, director, actor etc. Due to fatigue of age, he was not able to see all films. However, he saw many of the films which came in the last round.

A dispute broke out between the members and the chairman on the selection of best film, director etc. Sahni opined that Sherif C, director of Kanthan the Lover of Colour, should be given the award for the best director. He said that only a good director can make a good film. However, other members opposed it. They said though a director has a main role, a good film can be made only after mixing other components. Sahni was not ready to agree with it. You all take a decision, I’ll sign it, he said that and went to his room. Though some tried to bring him at the press meet, he cited health issues and kept away. Even after the announcement of awards, members of Chalachitra Academy tried to pacify him. Jury member Navya Nair too didn’t turn up.

There were some differences of opinion amongst jury members on the selection of the actor. Jayasurya, Soubin Shahir, Fahadh Faasil and Joju George were considered. Strong arguments broke out for Jayasurya and Soubin at late night discussions. Though Soubin was in the forefront, woman member of the jury argued for Jayasurya. Finally it was put on vote. When there were equal votes, the two were adjudged best actors.
