suicide

Debt is a curse for everyone who wants to lead a normal life. People tend to suicide because of debts, especially farmers. Suicide is their last resort. Farmers across the nation are mostly honor-driven. They want to pay whatever they owe. However, even climate change and other adverse conditions can put them in a grave situation. While Vijay Mallya is leading a prosperous life abroad after borrowing Rs 9000 crores from Indian banks, farmers are committing suicides for small debts.

In the past two months, seven farmers committed suicide in Idukki district. The immense pressure from banks force these people to end their life. The farmers have not yet recovered from the last year’s floods. People have taken loans not only for agriculture but also for the education of children. They think that if the farming yields well, they can easily pay back what they owe. However, unexpected floods destroyed everything. The farmers that committed suicide in the past two months received attachment notices from banks. If the banks had taken a light stand and had the government intervened, several lives could have been saved.

There are several plans for the rehabilitation of people post-floods. The delay of these plans affects the flood survivors massively. Their problems must be resolved as soon as possible. In Idukki alone over sixteen thousand people were affected by floods. While 33,000 people applied, only 3800 people were granted compensation. In order to bring back an agricultural district like Idukki, the government has to work actively.
