ALAPPUZHA: P K Medini won’t sing on election stages from now on. “No song can bring in votes now, times have changed”, said Medini.
Medini teacher revealed this to Kerala Kaumudi as elections are nearing. When she was honoured by Minister Kadakampally Surendran at central stadium as part of the 1000nd day celebrations of the cabinet, she had sung a song upon requesting.
People call her teacher because of their love. She had studied only up to fourth standard. She had to end her studies as she did not have money to pay her fee. However, her revolutionary songs made her famous and people thought that she was a music teacher. Thus, she got the name ‘Medini teacher’.
She joined Travancore coir factory in Alappuzha at the age of 12 when she lost her mother. First art organization was formed there so that children of labourers can participate in such events. Labourers R Sugathan and T V Thomas helped Medini to form the organization and their first singer was Anasooya. Anasooya had sung ‘Uyarum njan, naadake padarum njaan…’, written by P Bhaskaran. Medini is 86 years old.
