THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government might ask the banks to stop attachment actions over the properties of farmers who are due to pay up loans, in light of multiple suicides.

The government might consider announcing moratorium to the debts of people whose only source of income is agriculture. This will benefit around 1.5 lakhs farmers in the state.

In order to discuss this, the government will meet with Banker’s Panel on Wednesday.

The ministerial meeting proposed today will discuss the serious problems in the field of agriculture including farmer suicides. After the floods in August, the agriculture field in Idukki and Wayanad has suffered a major hit. The government stand is to allow some leeway for farmers who suffered 75 to 100 percent losses and to those who don’t have other sources of income.

Most of the farmers are in debt for loans that aren’t related to agriculture. So farmers receive attachment notices even after the government declared a moratorium. Therefore the agriculture department has put forward a request to declare a moratorium for other loans as well.
