The educational calendar has 203 working days in the calendar for the next educational year. This system has been promised for many years. This year also the educational year will start ensuring a minimum of 200 working days. However, this promise won’t be kept due to various reasons. Students of government schools lose many days to study. Students don’t even get 150 working days to study. Private schools will conduct classes on holidays and complete the chapters. However, government schools have many limitations for this.
Every parties conduct educations strikes and thus many working days are lost in every educational year. Teachers also entertain such strikes. The government should ensure the support of political parties so that 203 working days can be ensured in an educational year. Hartals also affect the educational system in a negative manner. Schools should also be excluded from hartals. If students should learn about politics, schooldays are not the suitable time for that.
The educational department is trying to upgrade the quality of education. 10th and 12th results are breaking the record each year. However, when it comes to quality, the reality is actually questionable. Teachers associations had also opposed the decision to incorporate 203 working days for the next educational year. They say that more than 200 working days are unnecessary. Six Saturdays are working days as per the new calendar. Many teachers are not ready to work on a holiday.
The General Education Department has decided to conduct SSLC, Plus Two examinations and Vocational higher secondary examinations at the same time from the next academic year. The decision to conduct the examinations simultaneously was taken at a School Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) monitoring committee meeting led by General Education secretary A Shahjahan on Tuesday.
