NEW DELHI: Uncertainty regarding Congress’ candidate list went on till the final hours due to group-caste hurdles.
Candidacy regarding KPCC President Mullappally Ramachandran, AICC General Secretary Oommen Chandy and K.C. Venugopal was decided earlier. Apart from the already decided Thiruvananthapuram, Mavelikkara, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod constituencies, names of T.N. Pratapan, Benny Behanan and V.K. Sreekantan was rumored to have been confirmed at Thrissur, Chalakkudy and Palakkad respectively. Oommen Chandy’s name was raised before the High Command, however, he was not willing to contest.
Later, Mullappally Ramachandran declared that he, Oommen Chandy and K.C. Venugopal won’t contest in the Lok Sabha election. He also said that the final candidate list would be out by 6 p.m.
But the task to find replacements for KC at Alappuzha and Mullappally at Vadakra remained. The fate of the Idukki seat also remained uncertain. Debates and confusion went on till the late hours of Saturday.
